Thank You Rabbi Avram Kogen

This Shabbat, Parshat Korach marks the beginning of Rabbi Avram Kogen's 13th year of devoted service to the Jewish Community Center of Paramus/Congregation Beth Tikvah. In honor of this anniversary I would like to again thank him for his many contributions to the religious life of our congregation. For the past 12 years Rabbi Kogen has served our congregation with distinction. His main responsibility is to serve as our Torah reader on Shabbat and many holidays. But the truth is he does so much more. He is a trusted friend and confidant to both me and Cantor Weiss. He leads and officiates many of our religious services. He has served as a High Holiday Chazzan. He has taught adult education classes. He is a friendly and welcoming face at our Shabbat services who welcomes visitors to our congregation. He is a teacher and a mentor within our community who has bonded with so many of our members over the years. Rabbi Kogen regularly inspires us with his tremendous knowledge of Jewish texts, his warm and caring personality and absolute commitment to our congregation. We are grateful for the vital role he assumes at the JCCP/CBT.

Rabbi Kogen is also a tremendous help to me "behind the scenes". For many years, Rabbi Kogen has worked with me on conversions, funerals, and other life cycle events. He is also part of my Beit Din for Jewish divorce. In this way, his reach and influence extends far beyond our synagogue community. I am grateful for the wisdom that he imparts in all of the work we conduct together. Rabbi Kogen always has the right story or anecdote to share at just the right time. Though modest in his manner, Rabbi Kogen is truly respected among the Rabbinic community in New Jersey. We are lucky to have him as part of our religious leadership.

I guess what I am trying to say is that Rabbi Kogen has had a tremendous impact and has made a profound difference in our synagogue. And for that we are grateful. God willing, we look forward to many more years together.

Jim Harbaugh Is No Hero

I’m not much of a college football fan. But I wanted to say something about the College Football Playoff championship game last Monday night, which saw the University of Michigan defeat Washington, 34-13. This tremendous victory was Michigan’s first national title since 1997. The Wolverines, as the Michigan football team is known, have a national following that numbers in the millions. They boast one of the premier sports programs in all of college sports. 38 former students are currently playing in the NFL.   The university has the largest stadium in the United States at 107,601seats, larger than any stadium used by an NFL team, and the third largest stadium in the world.   (By comparison, the largest NFL stadium, MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford NJ can seat 82,500.) Farewell, Cantor Weiss

After 26 years as Cantor of the JCCP/CBT, and having been named Cantor Emeritus at his retirement last June in recognition of his unique contributions to our synagogue, Cantor Sam and Raisy Weiss will leave the community and relocate to New York City next week.   Before they go, I would like to offer one last tribute. The role of a Cantor is a unique one. Sometimes that role is to be a teacher, other times a scholar or a mentor, all while striving to create an experience of communal prayer that is enriching to all. Whether it was through his beautiful davening , his training of hundreds of B’nai Mitzvah , the esteem he enjoys among his colleagues, or his mastery of the Jewish tradition, Cantor Weiss found ways to help us give expression to the voices in our own Jewish hearts.
